What happens in a binary trigger is that the reset spring action works twice. Binary triggers will engage the action not only on the trigger pull but also when we release the trigger. What’s actually happening is that on the initial trigger pull, obviously we fire one round but it fires another round on the release when the trigger resets. A binary trigger is a drop-in trigger that essentially allow you to fire two round with only one pull. In a machine gun, holding the trigger causes the weapon to continue firing until the shooter releases it or the ammunition runs out. Despite the increased firing speed, each round still requires a separate pull of the trigger. An FRT works by using the bolt carrier’s rearward motion to push the trigger forward after a shot. These devices were already controversial, but now they’re being made for handguns, which means more of them can move into circulation quietly.

The practical function is like a bump stock, hold the trigger finger tight and let it rain. Forced reset uses the cycling action to force the trigger to reset when the hammer cocks, making it ready to fire. On March 22, 2022, the ATF published an open letter to all licensed gun makers and sellers announcing that “some” FRTs are considered “machine guns” by federal law but declined to name specific companies or models. A better Block mount would make assembly easier, as well as make the trigger more reliable with a larger range of uppers. At this time the trip point on the bottom of the bolt carrier contacts the top of the safety lever, moving it forward. When the trigger is in this state the bolt carrier is unlocked, and probably has already started moving forward under the force of the buffer spring. The illustration on the left is when the Safety lever is in the “Locked” position. It is designed so that when it is installed it can not pivot, basically becoming part of the trigger.
Have you looked at a binary trigger? I’ve always considered bump stocks and the FRT triggers gimmicks and not worth the money. I thought it was that it reset as soon as you eased up on the trigger.
DOJ settles lawsuit involving forced reset triggers
With a forced reset trigger you have less moving parts than a binary trigger which makes it far more reliable. So when you pull the trigger, there is an extra spring (compared to traditional AR triggers) that pushes your trigger forward, back to the ‘start’ position which allows you to fire your subsequent shots much quicker. By legal definition, binary triggers do not mechanically turn AR15’s into machine guns as such cannot be regulated by the Gun Control Act or National Firearms Act.

They warned that it would make rapid-fire weapons more accessible and could lead to an increase in gun violence. They argued that the ATF had unfairly targeted legal products and overreached its regulatory power. The settlement prohibited FRTs from being used in handguns and required Rare Breed to enforce patents against copycat designs. This core disagreement led to extensive litigation and conflicting rulings from federal courts, including the U.S. This interpretation sparked nationwide controversy and prompted multiple lawsuits from FRT manufacturers and gun rights groups.
